A Good Start Programme

A Good Start (UBC) is a program through which we promote language development in preschool and kindergarten children (Transition Levels) by strengthening the pedagogical skills of early childhood educators and technicians, school administrators, and other stakeholders in the education system through professional development for teachers and regional leadership initiatives.

Language: The Foundation of All Learning

Language is a fundamental tool in early childhood, as it enables children to understand the world, communicate, and integrate into society, as well as to learn and develop the competencies and skills that enhance their learning opportunities.

Language development in early childhood does not occur spontaneously. It is fostered through high-quality educational experiences from the earliest years.

Evidence shows that early stimulation promotes:

  • Listening Comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Verbal Expression
  • The Basics of Reading and Writing

In addition, high-quality educational interactions enhance learning and cognitive development.

How do we do it?

At Un Buen Comienzo, we support language development in preschool and kindergarten children through purposeful teaching practices and meaningful learning experiences.

Our focus is on:

  • Enhancing Oral Language Skills Every Day
  • Promote meaningful conversations and interactions
  • Develop planned and meaningful experiences
  • Using Stories as a Foundation for Learning
  • To promote vocabulary, comprehension, and oral expression

The evidence shows that it is not only the amount of time spent learning that matters, but also how that time is used.

That is why we promote daily moments of explicit learning in which educators and staff members interact purposefully with children, fostering dialogue, understanding, and language use.

Educational interactions that enhance learning

Educational interactions are the everyday exchanges that take place in the classroom between adults and children, as well as among the preschoolers themselves.

These interactions occur when:

  • People talk and ask questions
  • Listen and respond actively
  • Ideas and vocabulary are expanded
  • We play and talk together
  • Participation is encouraged

Why are they important?

Because it is through these experiences that fundamental skills such as the following are developed:

Language
✅ Thinking
✅ Social Interaction
✅ Self-Regulation
✅ Comprehension

Evidence shows that improving the quality of teaching interactions promotes:

  • Early Literacy
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Social-Emotional Development
  • Social Competition

In early childhood education, it's not just what is taught that matters, but also how it is taught and how teachers and children interact.

Teacher Support and Feedback

To improve the quality of early childhood education, we work directly with educators and specialists in their day-to-day classroom practices.

How do we provide support?

  • Observing Real-Life Classroom Experiences
  • Providing Specific Feedback
  • Identifying Opportunities for Improvement
  • Strengthening Teaching Practices

This mentoring is not intended to evaluate, but rather to support professional development on a day-to-day basis.

Evidence shows that ongoing feedback strengthens teaching practices and improves student learning.

In addition, this work also promotes:

✅ Teamwork
✅ Professional trust
✅ The well-being of educators and staff
✅ Continuous improvement of teaching practices
